Conference: Transitions – ruptures – continuity

The academic conference sees itself primarily as a forum for exchange, in which younger and established historians present their research findings for discussion. The topics of the conference are correspondingly diverse: from the Nazi camps in the Tyrol region to central aspects of everyday life and the history of experiences in the last year of the war to resistance, persecution, denazification and the culture of remembrance that emerged after 1945. The conference focusses on selected aspects of war history without being able to cover all facets of this complex period.

To kick off the conference, historians Hannes Leidinger (University of Vienna) and Gustavo Corni (University of Trento) will give keynote speeches on the situation at the end of the war in Austria and Italy, placing regional developments in a broader context.

Other presentations come from Tyrol, South Tyrol and Trentino and focus on the last year of the war in today’s Euregio – 80 years after the end of this war characterised by unprecedented violence. The focus is less on the events of the war itself and more on the political, social and cultural conditions of the transition period. Of particular interest here are transformation processes, which are also analysed in a regional comparison. Which world views, strategies and practices, which continuities and ruptures are concealed behind these developments? And how did they influence the transition from war to peace and into a new era?

The conference is open to all interested parties free of charge – registration is not required. Interpretation of the presentations (German – Italian/Italian – German) will be provided.
